Full plot (contains spoilers)

Gerda Brandt and her foster brother grew up in poverty. Their parents steered them into theft, so both quickly went down the wrong path. As an adult, Gerda became a hotel thief, stealing from the kind-hearted Rolf von Crusius and ingratiating herself with his blind mother. When she was caught in her misdeeds, Gerda fled and later worked as a companion. During this time, she learns that people often only ever wanted what was good for her, and undergoes a change of heart and character: where there’s a will, there’s a way, as the film’s title suggests … and so the now-reformed Gerda marries Rolf and becomes a better person.
