The story
Inge is nearing 70 and has been married to Werner, who is older than her, for thirty years. Their marriage is routine but still intact, and they have been happy together. Inge alters clothes for a living; Werner is a retired teacher whose hobby is model railways. When Inge alters a pair of trousers for Karl, who is 76, she begins an affair with him. She initially struggles against her feelings because she does not want to put her marriage at risk, but finds herself unable to resist them.

Inge is approaching 70 and has been married to Werner, who is older than her, for thirty years. Their marriage is routine but still intact. They have sex with each other and have been happy so far. She is a seamstress who alters clothes, and he is a retired teacher who has made model railways his hobby. When Inge alters a pair of trousers for Karl, who is even older at 76, she begins an affair with him. At first she struggles against it because she does not want to put her marriage at risk, but she is powerless against her feelings. After confiding in her daughter Petra (Werner’s stepdaughter) and receiving her advice not to tell Werner, Inge finally confesses her new love. They argue, and she moves in with Karl. After a family celebration, the spouses walk together for a while and reminisce about things they experienced together. Later, Inge leaves Werner, who seems to take it well. One night she receives a call from Petra and learns that Werner has killed himself. After the funeral, Inge lives with Karl.
