A liberal atheist mother struggles to understand her teenage daughter’s sudden decision to convert to Islam.
The story
Wanda, a committed atheist and feminist, believes her blended family is liberal and open-minded. That confidence is shaken when her teenage daughter Nina announces that she intends to convert to Islam, live halal, wear a headscarf, and use the name Fatima. Wanda tries to learn about Islam so she can prepare for her daughter’s choice, but also attempts to change Nina’s mind. Her ex-husband Harald offers little help as he prepares to have a child with his new girlfriend. Wanda longs for the time when Nina’s main troubles were smoking pot and skipping school, and finds unexpected support from Hanife, the mother of Nina’s Muslim friend Maryam.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Wanda is a committed atheist and feminist, and considers herself and her blended family very liberal and open-minded. One day, her teenage daughter Nina announces that she has decided to convert to Islam and become Muslim, live halal, and wear a headscarf. She also wants to be called Fatima from now on. Wanda is shocked and taken aback. On the one hand, she tries to gather as much information about Islam as possible so she can adjust to and prepare for her daughter’s decision; on the other, she does everything she can to talk Nina out of it. Her ex-husband Harald, who is about to become a father again with his new girlfriend Sissy, is not much help. Wanda longs for the days when her daughter’s smoking pot and skipping school were her only worries. The overwhelmed Wanda receives unexpected support from Hanife, the mother of Nina’s Muslim friend Maryam. Hanife came to Austria with her parents as a child. She wants to protect her own daughter from precisely the old-fashioned view of women that Nina preaches in her zeal to convert. At Sissy and Harald’s wedding, Nina confides in Sissy that, as a favor to a friend and as a statement against homophobia, she plans to marry a gay friend who is being forced to marry. Shortly before the wedding, however, Nina decides not to go through with it after all. But she will not convert back; instead, she joins her mother, her friend Maryam, and Maryam’s mother Hanife in demonstrating for a feminist Islam. Nina eventually tells Wanda that her gay friend is moving in with them so he won’t have to get married.
