The story
August "Auggie" Pullman is a 10-year-old boy living in Brooklyn with his parents, older sister Olivia, and their dog, Daisy. Born with a rare medical facial deformity known as mandibulofacial dysostosis, Auggie has undergone numerous surgeries and often wears an astronaut helmet in public. While he has been homeschooled by his mother, his parents decide to enroll him in Beecher Prep, a private middle school, as he approaches the fifth grade. As the school year begins, Auggie must navigate the complexities of social interaction, facing both the challenges of being ostracized by some peers and the opportunity to form meaningful friendships with others.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Auggie Pullman, a boy with a severe facial deformity, enters Beecher Prep for the fifth grade. While he faces bullying from Julian Albans and his cronies, he befriends Jack Will. A conflict arises during Halloween when Auggie overhears Jack making disparaging remarks about him to his friends. This leads to a period of tension where Auggie avoids Jack until a mutual friend, Summer Dawson, helps clarify the situation. They eventually reconcile, and Jack stands up to Julian during a science fair dispute, leading to Jack's temporary suspension. Meanwhile, Auggie's sister Via finds her own path in the school's drama club, eventually performing in 'Our Town'. The narrative follows both siblings as they navigate their respective social hurdles. The conflict with Julian culminates in a confrontation with school administration regarding his bullying behavior. At a school retreat, Auggie's friends defend him from outside bullies. By graduation, Auggie no longer feels the need to wear his protective helmet, and his mother celebrates his journey, calling him a 'wonder'.
