In a dystopian future where mutants are hunted by machines, a group of heroes must travel back to 1973 to change history.
The story
In a dystopian 2023, robots called Sentinels hunt and kill mutants. After a desperate battle in Moscow, a group of survivors, including Kitty Pryde, manages to send a consciousness back in time to warn others. They eventually gather at a remote Chinese temple, joined by Storm, Logan, Magneto, and Charles Xavier. Xavier reveals that the Sentinel program was created following an assassination in 1973. To save the future, the team plans to use Kitty's powers to travel back to 1973. However, because of the risks involved, Logan volunteers to travel back himself, as his regenerative abilities allow him to survive the journey.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 2023, the X-Men fight a desperate battle against Sentinels in a remote Chinese temple. To prevent the creation of these machines, they decide to send Logan back to 1973. Upon arriving in the past, Logan joins a younger, alcoholic Charles Xavier and a desperate Mystique. They work together to stop Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask at the Paris Peace Accords. Meanwhile, Magneto attempts to intervene, leading to a confrontation where he believes he is protecting the future. In the present, the X-Men face a final onslaught of Sentinels. In the past, the heroes manage to stop the assassination of Trask, leading to the public realization that mutants can be heroes. This successfully alters the timeline, erasing the dystopian 2023 from history. Logan awakens in a new 2023 where the X-Men are alive and the school is thriving. A post-credits scene reveals the ancient mutant En Sabah Nur.
