Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1999, Eli and Danny attend a New Year's Eve party with Laura, where they witness the 'year 2000 problem' cause all electronics to gain sentience and turn hostile. After a bloody massacre at the party, Eli, Danny, and Laura escape with three delinquents: Ash, CJ, and Farkas. They seek refuge in an old mill and later encounter a VHS store clerk and Laura's ex-boyfriend, learning that the devices have formed a collective consciousness called the 'Amalgamation' intent on enslaving humanity. They meet musician Fred Durst and head to the local high school, discovering townspeople have been enslaved by brain-implanted chips. CJ sacrifices himself to save Fred while the Amalgamation grows to a monstrous size. Fred, Ash, and Jonas distract the machines while Laura attempts to enter the Amalgamation to insert a kill code. After being electrocuted, she is saved by Eli, who uses a condom as a protective glove to successfully insert the code, destroying the Amalgamation. They reunite with survivors as dawn breaks. Five years later in 2005, Eli, Laura, and Ash visit their friends' graves, only for Ash's new iPod to glitch, suggesting the algorithm survived.
