After losing his journalism job, a writer becomes an anonymous car mover in a workplace where management controls every move.
The story
A journalist loses his job after reviewing his own book and, to avoid unemployment, takes a car-moving position at the Yard, a new-car transfer site in Malmö. There he is known by the number 11811, while employees are tightly controlled by management and cannot defend themselves or explain workplace mistakes. Individual workers can be blamed for events outside their control. Meanwhile, his son still lives at home, and financial strain is damaging their relationship. The new job offers a precarious livelihood, but its rigid, impersonal conditions compound the pressures on his family life.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A journalist is fired after writing a review of his own book. To avoid unemployment, he takes a job moving cars at the Yard—his workplace’s nickname for a loading and transfer site for new cars—in Malmö. At his new job, his identity is reduced to a five-digit number: 11811. The employees are entirely controlled by management’s directives and are not allowed to defend themselves or explain mistakes made while working. Individuals may arbitrarily be blamed for events beyond their control. Management urges employees to report any colleagues they discover stealing airbags. A reward is offered for reliable tips. The journalist’s son still lives at home, and their relationship is strained by a lack of money. After a debt-enforcement seizure in which his son’s TV is confiscated, and after what seems to be an arbitrary dismissal from his car-moving job, the situation reaches a breaking point, and the journalist is driven to inform on someone and lie in order to get his monotonous job moving cars back.
