Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ezra Cohen, a secular Jewish finance broker, and Amira Mohammed, a black woman from a Nation of Islam family, begin a relationship following a humorous 'meet cute' involving a mistaken Uber ride. As they move in together, tensions rise with Amira's father, Akbar, who prefers she marry within their faith. Ezra eventually takes Amira to meet his progressive, wealthy parents, Shelley and Arnold, leading to awkward interactions regarding social movements. Ezra then attempts to meet Akbar and his wife, Fatima, at a restaurant, which results in further friction. After Amira accepts Ezra's proposal, the couple hosts a dinner for both sets of parents that ends in disaster, featuring insults about antisemitism and a literal fire. To bridge the gap, the couple spends time with their future in-laws separately, experiencing Akbar's attempts to humiliate Ezra in a basketball game and Shelley's oblivious violations of black social rules. Following disastrous bachelor and bachelorette parties, Ezra and Amira confront their parents about their behavior and decide to call off the wedding. Three months later, Ezra delivers a podcast speech about the difficulty of understanding different cultures, which moves both sets of parents. They eventually meet at a boutique to apologize to one another. The film concludes with the families reconciling and the couple marrying in a ceremony attended by both a rabbi and an NOI minister.
