The story
In Japan, youth unemployment and violence form the backdrop to the story of Naoki, a 20-year-old caught in a cycle of violence and idleness. A family friend offers Naoki’s mother the chance to send him for an apprenticeship with the local Yakuza. The training is initially intended to last a year, giving Naoki time to decide whether he wants to pursue a life in the Mafia. The documentary follows this offer and the choice it places before him.

Youth unemployment and violence are issues in Japan, too. In his documentary, Jean-Pierre Limosin follows 20-year-old Naoki, who has also been caught up in a cycle of violence and idleness. A family friend offers Naoki’s mother the chance to send her son for an apprenticeship with the local Yakuza. The training is initially supposed to last one year, and during that time Naoki must decide whether he wants to lead a life in the Mafia.
