The story

The film alternates between two storylines. In one, eight-year-old Janek and his father leave their industrialized city for the seaside, while Janek’s mother is left to contend with missing her son and growing horror at the breakdown of human bonds and the brutality of city life. In the other, aging Mariusz, an autobiographical figure, tries to rebuild his life after the deaths of his parents. In his imagination, he recreates selected idols from his youth, including Andrzej Wajda and Tadeusz Nalepa. The stories center on separation, grief, memory, and the difficulty of restoring what has been lost.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film focuses on two alternating storylines. In the first, when eight-year-old Janek and his father leave their industrialized city for the seaside, Janek’s mother feels the ache of missing her son, along with growing horror at the breakdown of human bonds and the brutality of life in her city. In the second, autobiographical storyline, the aging Mariusz (the director’s alter ego) tries to put his life back together after his parents’ deaths. In his imagination, Mariusz recreates selected idols from his youth: Andrzej Wajda, Tadeusz Nalepa, and others. But when he realizes that the past can no longer be undone, in a symbolic scene by the sea he buries his world of memories and immerses himself in the water, disappearing completely into the ocean’s depths.
