The story
First Lieutenant Oskar von Rastenfeld is transferred to a Rhineland garrison as punishment for his affair with Daisy, an operetta singer. The colonel’s matchmaking wife pushes him toward Dina Kemp, the daughter of a wealthy wine merchant, and the two become engaged. But Dina loves Max Hoffmann, the bandmaster, while Oskar continues to pine for Daisy, whose music he hears on the gramophone every day. Daisy unexpectedly arrives in the area and learns from Max what has happened. Determined to intervene, she secures an invitation to a party at the Kemps’ home, where she sets her plan in motion.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
First Lieutenant Oskar von Rastenfeld has been transferred to a garrison in the Rhineland as punishment for his affair with Daisy, an operetta singer. There, the colonel’s wife, who enjoys arranging marriages, wants to get him married, and Rastenfeld becomes engaged to Dina Kemp, the daughter of a wealthy wine merchant. Dina, however, loves Max Hoffmann, the bandmaster, while the lieutenant still thinks longingly of Daisy, whose music the gramophone plays for him every day. Unexpectedly, Daisy follows him there; she finds her beloved billeted with the Kemps during a field exercise. Max Hoffmann, who was once engaged at a theater with her, tells her what has happened. Daisy decides to take action. She manages to get an invitation to the party at the Kemps’ home. There, she thoroughly turns both the wine merchant’s head and that of the lieutenant’s uncle, General von Rastenfeld. The next day, her cleverly devised scheme succeeds. By getting the general into a compromising situation—and fortunately having all the people involved summoned in time—she forces him to give his consent. The grand tattoo is also the engagement concert for two happy couples: Daisy and Rastenfeld, and Dina and Hoffmann.
