Full plot (contains spoilers)
The main character is 19-year-old Pascal, a habitual contrarian with a couldn’t-care-less attitude. He lives with his single mother in an outlying district of Zurich. After dropping out of his carpentry apprenticeship, he works as a pizza delivery driver. One day, Pascal receives his call-up papers for recruit school and is forced to report for service. From the outset, he defies the orders of his superior, Senior Sergeant Bodenmann. This brings him to the attention of the commander, Colonel Zünd, who realizes that Pascal simply lacks a goal in life and supports him. At recruit school, Pascal learns to develop team spirit and take responsibility. For the first time, he experiences a sense of recognition and friendship. After completing recruit school, he wants to finish the carpentry apprenticeship he abandoned. At the same time, he is interested in Leila, a beautiful student he met while out socializing during recruit school, and wants to win her over. But his fresh start just doesn’t work out. All his applications for an apprenticeship are rejected because of his inadequate grades. It hits him very hard that nobody is willing to give him a second chance. When Leila also goes abroad for a semester to study, his recently acquired self-confidence is shaken. His old patterns of behavior gradually return, ultimately leading him to fire indiscriminately with his assault rifle—which, as is customary in Switzerland, he keeps at home—and kill five people.
