A land sale brings the Weigel and Galkin families together just as an unexploded wartime bomb sparks a disagreement over how to handle it.

The story

Daniela and Bernd Weigel sell a building plot to the Galkins, a Russian-descent family planning a home for everyone. After the contract is signed, the Galkins celebrate, and the two husbands quickly bond over drinks. Daniela calls her son Johannes to bring Bernd home; there Johannes meets Irina, the Galkins’ daughter. Later, the young pair must collect their drunken parents from the police station. Soon afterward, Viktor discovers a 250-kilogram unexploded World War II bomb on the property. Bernd wants to call the bomb-disposal unit, but Viktor wants to dispose of it secretly.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The married couple Daniela and Bernd Weigel sell a plot of land for development to the Galkin family, who are of Russian descent. Svetlana and her husband Viktor Galkin plan to build a house there for the whole family. After signing the contract, the Galkins celebrate exuberantly, and the two husbands become friends over alcoholic drinks. Daniela initially watches the revelry with concern and calls for her son Johannes to come and take Bernd home. There, Johannes meets Irina, the Galkins’ daughter. The celebration ends at the police station, where Irina and Johannes have to collect their drunken parents. After tipsy Daniela pours vodka into the Galkins’ aquarium, Irina and Johannes also have to find a replacement for Zhenja’s dead ornamental fish so that he does not find out. Soon afterward, Viktor discovers a 250-kilogram unexploded World War II bomb on the newly acquired plot. While Bernd wants to call the bomb-disposal unit, Viktor wants to get rid of the bomb secretly. Following instructions in an online video, he defuses it and plans to sink it in the Rhine. After the axle of a van belonging to his bathroom-design business breaks, Viktor is stopped by the police, who discover the bomb. The operation ends without an explosion, but Viktor receives a hefty bill for the police deployment. Johannes, who has fallen in love with Irina, is jealous of Sascha Kornikow, a wealthy lawyer. To impress Irina, he steals a 150-year-old balalaika from the display case of a Russian restaurant, with help from a distraction staged by his grandfather Reginald. Irina would like to play the instrument, and Johannes replaces it with one from a flea market. Irina and Johannes grow closer as a result. Three weeks after the police operation, the two families meet to discuss the bill, which totals more than €123,000 for road closures, evacuation, a helicopter equipped with a thermal imaging camera, and searches and excavation work for any other possible bombs. Daniela does not want to contribute to the costs, since all the bills are addressed to the Galkins. Sascha Kornikow, the Galkins’ lawyer, demands that the costs be shared; otherwise, his client Viktor will also tell the police about Bernd’s role, which had not yet been put on record. First Irina and Johannes have a falling-out, and then they both fall out with their parents as well. While Johannes’s grandfather Reginald and Irina’s grandmother Ljudmila try to raise the money by playing roulette at the casino, Irina temporarily moves in with Sascha. After Johannes and Irina make up, they threaten their parents that they will pack their bags and move away together if the parents cannot reach an agreement. The threat works, and the Galkin and Weigel couples reach an amicable agreement. Grandma Ljudmila gives them a basketful of money that she won at the casino. Sascha asks Dimitri, a waiter at the Russian restaurant, to return the stolen balalaika to his boss.
