The story
A woman is murdered with a razor near Sir Robert Marney’s country estate, and soon afterward underworld figure Joe Legge visits him. The next evening, a striptease dancer is murdered with a razor in a nightclub where Legge and his gang are meeting, and Marney also appears there. The gangsters want to use Marney’s castle as a hideout. Gray investigates the murders alongside the police, unaware of Legge’s plan to rob a railway cash-in-transit vehicle.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A woman is murdered with a razor by a railway embankment near Sir Robert Marney’s country estate. Shortly afterward, Marney is visited by underworld figure Joe Legge. Years earlier, Marney had helped Legge escape abroad. Legge demands that Marney help him carry out a railway robbery. Otherwise, Marney’s daughter, Denise, will be murdered. In desperation, Marney hires private detective Johnny Gray. The following evening, a striptease dancer is murdered with a razor in a sinister nightclub. At the same time, Joe Legge is meeting with his gang there, and Marney also turns up. The gangsters want to use Marney’s castle as a hideout. Johnny Gray now investigates the murders alongside the police. Gray has no idea that Legge plans to rob a railway cash-in-transit vehicle. In the end, Scotland Yard corners the gang at Marney Castle and recovers the money. Gray discovers that Marney’s late wife had once been in love with Legge. To keep Legge from bothering the woman, Marney helped him escape after a robbery. It turns out that the razor murderer is none other than the young Denise Marney, because her mother had taken her own life with a razor in front of a mirror. As a child, Denise had to watch the whole thing and had suffered ever since from a deadly compulsion.
