Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the late 1980s, Stipan, an elderly socialist official who is terminally ill, escapes from the hospital to ask his nephew Martin to bury him with a priest. Stipan dies, prompting Martin to remember the events that led to their estrangement. In 1951, Martin was attending teacher-training school in Istria. After Stipan informed the school authorities about a letter in which Martin had expressed doubts about the reforms and the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, Martin was expelled from school and subjected to insults by an angry mob. A ricochet struck him in the groin, leaving him infertile. His girlfriend, Marta, fled to Trieste while pregnant, then went to Australia, where she gave birth to a son, John.
