A 13-year-old Afghan boy joins a local choir hoping its trip to Hungary can help reunite him with his father.
The story
After an Afghan family is separated while fleeing the Taliban, the mother, son, and daughter reach Liebigheim in Swabia, while the father remains in Hungary. Thirteen-year-old Zoro hopes to bring him over, earning money through shady dealings and speaking with him by phone every day. When Zoro learns that the local boys’ choir is rehearsing for a competition in Hungary, he sees a possible route to his father. Though shy about singing and the Christian lyrics, Zoro proves talented, surprising even the choir’s embittered director. Still, the trip initially goes to his friend and rival Julian, not Zoro.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
An Afghan family was separated while fleeing the Taliban. The mother, son, and daughter made it as far as Liebigheim in Swabia, but the father was left behind in Hungary. To bring him over, 13-year-old Zoro gets involved in various shady dealings to earn money. They talk on the phone every day. By chance, he learns that the local boys’ choir is rehearsing for a competition in Hungary. With his goal in sight, he overcomes his shyness about singing and the Christian lyrics and, to everyone’s astonishment—including that of Frau Lehmann, the embittered director of the “Liebigheimer Sparrows”—the boy turns out to be talented. Nevertheless, he is not initially chosen for the trip; his friend and rival Julian is. By blackmailing his fellow choir member Julian, Zoro gets him to withdraw, and Zoro is slated to sing the solo in the performance. He actually manages to smuggle his father across the border in the luggage compartment of the tour bus. After that, Zoro continues fighting for his new home and for his father, a police officer trained by the Germans, to find work. Even when he discovers that Frau Lehmann has withdrawn from choir work, he joins forces with his choir and migrant friends to fight for the choir to be revived.
