Two Bavarian village officials travel to Hamburg to claim a distant African inheritance, but their plans go awry in St. Pauli.

The story

In the remote Bavarian village of Mooskirchen, Mayor Ferdinand Lechner and his friend Karl Köpfle face a financial crisis. The locals hope to turn their village into a tourist destination, but lack the money, access road, and attractions to draw visitors. A surprising inheritance offers a possible way out: a vast, apparently profitable plantation in Africa. Since nobody in Mooskirchen has seen the property, Lechner and Köpfle are appointed to travel there. They set off for Hamburg to catch a ship, hoping to enjoy the city’s St. Pauli district before continuing their journey. Instead, the pair are robbed, and their wandering takes them through Hamburg as their plans unravel.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Mayor Ferdinand Lechner and his friend Karl Köpfle sit on the local council of Mooskirchen, a small, sleepy village in the remotest reaches of Bavaria. To escape their financial plight, the people of Mooskirchen plan to turn their village into a tourist hotspot. But how can they do that when they have no money for the necessary tourist advertising and are far from everything—not even having an access road to the nearest highway interchange? The area is also sorely lacking in tourist attractions, and even basic amenities such as a spa hall or a swimming pool are nowhere to be found. So it seems almost like a miracle when news arrives at Mooskirchen’s town hall that the village is to receive an inheritance. There is just one catch: the property is in far-off Africa. The plantation in question is exceptionally large and seems quite profitable, but no one from Mooskirchen has ever seen it. And so the two village emissaries appointed to the task, Lechner and Köpfle, first make their way to Hamburg, planning to set sail from there. But their plans are already turned upside down at the waterfront. While the two temporary bachelors want to have a really good time in the “sinful” red-light district of St. Pauli before reaching the African bush, the two dim-witted Bavarian bumpkins from the provinces promptly fall prey to thieves. Their aimless wanderings around the Hanseatic city take them as far as Hagenbeck Zoo and a seedy dive called the “Green Shark.”
