Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two families from very different social backgrounds—the wealthy von Zangenheims from Munich and the working-class Kowalskis from Berlin—are stranded on a deserted island after Hubert von Zangenheim invites the Kowalskis on a boat trip off Mauritius, grateful to them for foiling the theft of Renate Zangenheim’s handbag. The two fathers in particular are mostly hostile toward each other, while the Kowalskis’ son falls in love with the von Zangenheims’ daughter. Only after the families overcome their social conflicts and work together do they manage to escape with the help of a raft they build themselves. They make it back to civilization, but the two young people decide to stay on the island.
