A long-term couple tries to revive their romance, only to confront whether their mismatched hopes still leave a future together.
The story
After watching a romantic film, Hans and Laura—whom he calls “Heinz”—recognize that the romance has faded from their eight-year relationship. Heinz hopes for a home, children and a more passionate partnership, while Hans is content with his carefree, student-like life and resists giving up his independence. They live above the copy shop Hans runs with his friend Florian, and their days often revolve around the couch and video games. Hoping to rekindle their connection, Heinz makes a list of ways to bring more spark into their lives and begins trying to recreate the feeling of their early relationship.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hans and Laura (whom he calls “Heinz”) are a couple, and after seeing a romantic film at the cinema, they both realize that their relationship has lost its romance over the eight years they have been together. Heinz and Hans have different ideas about life. She would like a townhouse with a garden, ideally with children, while he does not want to give up his independent life. Heinz works as a voice-over artist. Although she would have liked to become an actress herself, she now makes her living lending her voice to a cartoon traffic light. Hans, meanwhile, has somehow carried on living his carefree student life: after graduating, he opened a copy shop with his friend Florian, where he still works. He and Heinz live in the apartment above it, which is furnished in a rather student-like way; it is cheaper because it is technically commercial premises. The old Golf they drive around in has a broken reverse gear, barely starts in cold weather, and plays the Dirty Dancing soundtrack in its cassette deck. Heinz would like to bring more spark back into their relationship, instead of just sitting on the couch and playing through video games together. So she makes a list with Hans, hoping to bring more passion into their lives again. She tries to recreate how they first met, gets hair extensions, and would also like a more fulfilling sex life. When Max, one of Heinz’s former boyfriends, runs into the couple, Hans even gives him her phone number. Heinz is puzzled by Hans’s lack of jealousy. Is this what she imagined great love would be like? She runs into Max again at her sister’s party. This time Hans gets jealous and drinks a lot. He lets Max take his place in the karaoke duet with Heinz. Later, when Heinz has a drink with Max outside the building and they share a brief kiss, she realizes as they talk that despite all his talk, Max is actually boring. He also hasn’t contacted her at all for years, even though he could have. She leaves him there and goes back to the party to find Hans. There she catches him in the bathroom in the act of having a quickie with an intern from the copy shop. They shout at each other, and their relationship seems to be over. At that very moment, they get a call saying that Hans’s father has died and that he has to take care of all the arrangements. They travel together to Hans’s mother’s home and, along with his brother, make the funeral arrangements and discuss how to care for their mother, who has Alzheimer’s, in the future. Hans’s brother is furious about the affair and keeps throwing it in his face. At the family home, everyone involved also has some time to reflect. When a former school friend invites Hans and Heinz to dinner, then accuses Hans and tries to humiliate him, Heinz stands up for him. After the funeral, Hans watches a wedding rehearsal in the church, while Heinz talks with Hans’s mother about happiness in her marriage. The two of them now take care of the house, and his mother moves in with his brother for the time being. In the house, the events of the past few days help Hans and Heinz rediscover their love for each other. They also talk about the future and their worries. When Heinz steps outside the house, a beach suddenly appears there. Hans follows her, confesses his love, and proposes to her. This final scene is the one Hans and Heinz saw at the cinema at the beginning of the film.
