A runaway crocodile in Regensburg forces a wary doctor and an unconventional reptile expert into an uneasy hunt.

The story

After an illegal crocodile sale goes wrong, the animal escapes into the Danube. A newly qualified doctor, Ann Berg, grows suspicious when a roe deer carcass is found in a Regensburg storm drain with a large claw inside it. Her acquaintance Bützje, a reporter chasing a sensational story, brings her to Mitch Croc Mc Dearie, a former Everglades crocodile-farm owner now running a reptile house. Mitch joins Ann and Bützje in searching the sewers, where they encounter the crocodile and barely escape. When police dismiss their warning, Mitch and Ann set out to catch the animal themselves, even as the criminals involved in its illegal sale remain nearby.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Animal dealer Killiak and his two accomplices want to sell a crocodile illegally. However, during the handover, a car accident sends the animal into the Danube. A short while later, the half-eaten carcass of a roe deer is found in a storm drain beneath the Stone Bridge in Regensburg. Ann Berg, a newly qualified medical doctor who hopes to work in forensic medicine, becomes suspicious when she finds a large claw in the carcass. Her acquaintance Bützje, a gay reporter who smells a sensational story, introduces her to Mitch Croc Mc Dearie. Mitch, whose real name is Gustav Michael Weihasse (which is why Ann later sometimes mocks him by calling him “Weichhase”), used to own a crocodile farm in the Everglades. But for the sake of his adolescent daughter Sara, he moved to Regensburg, where he now runs a reptile house. He lives on a houseboat on the banks of the Danube. Mitch, Ann, and Bützje make their way through the aforementioned drain into an underground sewer system and come across the crocodile. They barely manage to escape, but the animal devours the case containing Ann’s work equipment and destroys her small car. The police don’t take the three of them seriously when they warn them. Mitch has also missed Sara’s performance in a street-dance battle because of the incident, which upsets both his daughter and his ex-wife. Mitch and Ann now try to catch the animal together, after ditching the annoying Bützje. Their plan is to lure it with a live sheep tethered in the water and with blood. Killiak and his men are also trying to catch the crocodile nearby. When they spot Mitch and Ann, they attack them. The two manage to drive off their attackers temporarily, but the crocodile takes the opportunity to tear the sheep apart. Mitch just manages to tag the reptile with a harpoon-mounted tracking device. The gangsters pursue Mitch and Ann, but the two manage to shake them off. In the process, they happen upon Sara and her boyfriend in the middle of the wilderness. The pair have borrowed Mitch’s motorcycle and sidecar to go to a secluded body of water. But Mitch shows no understanding for their romantic feelings. Sara and Ann find Mitch’s behavior embarrassing. Ann gives Mitch a stern talking-to and gets him to apologize to his daughter. Mitch, who recognized the attackers, gives the police a tip. They search a warehouse and seize numerous animals that Killiak has been keeping illegally. Killiak plots revenge. Mitch and Ann decide to spend the night by the water when Bützje suddenly turns up in a boat. The next morning, the criminals are back too, but Mitch, Ann, and Bützje escape on the motorcycle and sidecar. After Killiak’s men find out Mitch’s address, they put a venomous snake in the sidecar of the motorcycle parked there. The crocodile kills the lifeguard at the local public swimming pool. The half-eaten body washes up near Mitch’s houseboat shortly afterward. Mitch and Ann realize the danger and race to the swimming pool on the motorcycle and sidecar, causing panic among the swimmers. Ann is bitten in the thigh by the snake, but Mitch manages to suck most of the venom out of the wound. By now, Killiak and his helpers are on the houseboat. They find the lifeguard’s body and dispose of it. Killiak also finds Mitch’s cell phone and lures Sara to the reptile house with a fake text message. When the police arrive at the houseboat, having been informed by Ann over the phone, they find no body there. Mitch is then supposed to be arrested, but he and Ann escape once again. They go to the forensic medicine institute, where Ann injects herself with an antidote as a precaution. By examining crocodile blood stuck to a knife, Ann discovers not only that the animal is female, but also that it is about to lay eggs. The crocodile’s prospective buyers are evidently after the eggs. Mitch takes Ann and Bützje to a shopping center and buys various household chemicals, which the three use to make explosives. Killiak, who has taken Sara hostage, calls Mitch and demands that he bring him the crocodile. The three do indeed manage to catch the animal. Since it has already laid its eggs, Mitch destroys the nest with one of their homemade explosives. Mitch and Ann take the reptile by boat to the agreed meeting place, a warehouse in Regensburg harbor, where not only Killiak and his men but also the two buyers are waiting. When Killiak realizes the crocodile has already laid its eggs, a fight breaks out between the two sides. The crocodile, freed by one of the gangsters, eats Killiak and one of his accomplices before Mitch manages to kill it with the last of the explosives. Mitch makes up with his daughter, who has been freed. Ann and he kiss before the three of them head off together in a police boat. Bützje has secretly taken one of the eggs, and the hatchling now emerges from it. But Bützje accidentally drops it into the harbor basin—and nobody else notices.
