Zweimal lebenslänglich (2015)

Franziska and Sebastian have been a happy couple for four years and enjoy spending time together. One morning, the police arrive at their apartment and arrest Sebastian. He is accused of murder. Franziska believes it must be a mistake and that he will be home again that afternoon, but he remains in pretrial detention. It emerges that Sebastian had an affair with the murder victim and was with her on the day of the crime. His DNA was found on and in the victim’s intimate areas. Nevertheless, Sebastian vehemently maintains his innocence, but he is sentenced to life in prison. Franziska’s world falls apart. She argues with her parents, who accuse her of refusing to face reality. Her female coworkers turn away from her. What hits her especially hard is that Sebastian’s best friend also breaks off contact. She becomes increasingly isolated, but continues to stand by Sebastian and marries him in prison. Eventually, she begins to doubt whether he really is innocent. Through a coworker, she meets a former girlfriend of Sebastian’s. The woman tells her that Sebastian can be extremely domineering and does not shy away from violence. Franziska had never experienced this side of him during their relationship. She confronts Sebastian with what she has learned, but he brushes it off. A short time later, Franziska is allowed to have her first extended visit with him. During sex, Sebastian initially has erectile dysfunction and then becomes violent toward Franziska. She calls emergency services and leaves the prison. The next day, Sebastian is found hanged in his cell. Franziska begins a new life, but doubts remain about whether he really was the perpetrator. Later, she sees a television report saying that the body of a woman has been found, mutilated in the same way as the murder victim in Sebastian’s case. It is therefore left open whether Sebastian really committed the crime.
