Full plot (contains spoilers)

Manuel works as a photojournalist and is secretly in love with his best friend, Mia, a translator. They share the same interests and dreams, including moving to New York. As a child, Mia dreamed of being picked up by an astronaut in his rocket and flying with him to the stars. When Mia goes to Bolzano for a few days on business, she falls head over heels for Michele, a macho pilot who comes to Vienna to see her. Dreamer Manuel, who was just about to confess his love to Mia, is devastated when he learns that the couple plans to move to Rome. At the support group for abandoned men run by his roommate Detlev, they decide to win Mia back. The men devise a plan to steal an old two-seat rocket from the Technical Museum. By luck more than good sense, they pull it off, and the rocket, codenamed “Astrid,” is placed on the outskirts of the city. Meanwhile, two policewomen who are friends separate Mia and Michele, whereupon Manuel’s neighbor, Mrs. Müller, drives Mia to the outskirts. There she finds Manuel waiting for her in a spacesuit. Together they climb into the rocket and fly to the stars in their imagination.
