Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Wrong Sword Hall, the leading swordsmanship school in the Northeast, has three outstanding disciples: senior disciple Bai Fuguo (played by David Chiang), second disciple Wang Jingguo (played by Hsu Shao-chiang), and third disciple Wu Anguo (played by Liu Sung-jen). Bai and Wang compete in a duel for the position of sect leader. After losing, Wang leaves the Wrong Sword Hall and establishes a new school of his own, the One Saber Society, in Nanjing. Seven years later, Wang, now using saber techniques, challenges Bai again. Wang wins through trickery and demands to take away Bai’s infant son, whom Bai is forbidden to acknowledge as his own. The child becomes Wang Jingguo’s adopted son, Wang Ning (played by Wu Hsing-kuo). Years later, Ning grows up in the One Saber Society and is taught its saber techniques. He is close friends with his senior fellow disciple A-Jie (played by Jack Kao) and Wang Jingguo’s biological daughter, Xiao Lian (played by Charlie Yeung). Wang lies to Ning, claiming that Bai is the enemy who killed Ning’s biological parents, and sends him to challenge Bai at the Wrong Sword Hall. He also secretly makes a deal with Wu Anguo, the third disciple, who is in love with Bai’s late wife: if Wu helps Ning kill Bai and then kills Ning himself, Wang will install Wu as leader of the Wrong Sword Hall. Ning challenges Bai. Knowing that Ning is his son, Bai calmly accepts and deliberately shares his martial arts insights with him during their duel. When Wu suddenly intervenes, Bai dies by Ning’s saber. Ning soon learns that Bai was his birth father and breaks with Wang. Xiao Lian, too, is willing to leave her father and follow Ning. Wu pursues Ning and Lian, but is eventually killed when the Wrong Sword Hall attacks him. Wang then sends Jie to kill Ning, who intends to live in seclusion with Lian. Jie deliberately dies by Ning’s blade; before dying, he says Wang will not give up and urges Ning to strike first. Ning therefore challenges Wang, carrying his birth father’s memorial tablet. In the end, Ning blinds Wang in both eyes with a surprise thrust of the sword hidden inside the tablet. Remembering the grievances and entanglements between the two generations, Ning cuts off one of his own arms to show that he is putting an end to it all.
