The story

Divorced, he lives with his daughter Paula and plays bandoneon in a small café with three fellow musicians. After their singer leaves Argentina, they persuade Carlos Tortola, a singer from years past who now lives in a nursing home, to join them. Forced to sell his shop, Julio is in a car crash with taxi driver Mariela, a single mother caring for a deaf child. Full plot (contains spoilers)

November 2001, Buenos Aires: Argentina is in the midst of a deep economic crisis. Julio Ferber (Diego Cremonesi) owns a shoe store he inherited from his father. There are no customers, and he has no money to pay the supplier who takes most of the shoes from the store. He is divorced and lives with his daughter, Paula. In the evenings, he plays the bandoneon at a small café with Carlos (piano), Atilio (violin), and Tito (double bass). Their singer has left Argentina, like many others, and they persuade the singer of yesteryear, Carlos Tortola, who is now in a nursing home, to join them. Julio is forced to sell his store. He wants to sell his car, but taxi driver Mariela (Marina Blatti) crashes into him. She is a single mother caring for a deaf child and asks him not to report the accident to the insurance company; in return, she will drive the band members to their performances for free. Julio feels sorry for her and agrees. He then tells his daughter Paula that he has decided to emigrate to Germany because of the situation in Argentina. He sells his apartment and deposits the money in the Central Bank of Argentina. Unfortunately, the finance minister announces that he has decided to freeze bank accounts, allowing people to withdraw only 250 pesos a week. Desperate, Julio goes to the bank and gets caught up in a large, violent protest. He manages to secure a performance for the band for the wealthy, corrupt Senator Salinas. Atilio objects, leaves the band, and is killed in the protest. Desperate, Julio boards a ship to work on it on the way to Europe, but eventually changes his mind and returns to Buenos Aires to play the bandoneon with his band.
