The story
In an isolated village in Västergötland, the death of elderly recluse Erik Zander leaves his estate without known heirs. The village’s richest man expects to take it over at a favorable price, but at Erik’s funeral his previously unknown granddaughter Fanny appears as the sole heir. Fanny arrives with her friend Zac, and their presence causes a commotion in a community where people have long known one another and resist change and new ideas. Gottfrid Pettersson is the only villager described as warmly welcoming the newcomers; village priest Henning Colmer also takes their side in the conflicts that follow.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Änglagård is a manor house with an associated estate of woodland and farmland, situated in an isolated village in Västergötland. When its owner, the elderly recluse Erik Zander (Per Oscarsson), dies without any known heirs, the village’s richest man, Axel Flogfält (Sven Wollter), expects to take over the estate at a very favorable price. But at the funeral, Erik’s previously unknown granddaughter, Fanny Zander (Helena Bergström), suddenly appears as the sole heir to Änglagård. The arrival of Fanny and her friend Zac (Rikard Wolff), whose “sexual orientation is questionable” (according to a review in Expressen), causes a great commotion in the small village, where everyone has known one another for a long time and wants nothing to do with change or newfangled ideas. The only villager who happily welcomes the newcomers with warmth and sympathy is the old man Gottfrid Pettersson (Ernst Günther), who lives with his brother Ivar (Tord Peterson). But Henning Colmer (Reine Brynolfsson), the village priest, also takes their side in the conflicts that arise. The plot thickens when it is revealed that Fanny had another reason for moving to the village: to search for her unknown father, whom she suspects must reasonably be somewhere in the village.
