When a strange child is taken in, a near-future village that tolerates no strangers turns its suspicions on her.
The story
In a lonely village in the near future, young Skalde has earned acceptance despite her mother Edith’s outsider status; she is a respected member and protégé of village leader Pesolt. When Edith finds a strange, lonely child named Meisis in their garden and takes her in against village law, Skalde is horrified and drives the girl into the woods. The two later encounter each other again, and Meisis is allowed to stay with Skalde and Edith. Many villagers believe wolves exchange their own children, in human form, for human children. After sheep disappear, suspicion falls on Meisis.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A lonely village in the near future: Young Skalde has grown up as the daughter of Edith, an outsider. Unlike her mother, she has managed to earn acceptance from the village community, which tolerates no strangers in its midst. As a respected member, she has been appointed protégé of the village leader, Pesolt. Skalde’s rise has strained her relationship with Edith. One day, Edith finds a strange child, Meisis, in the garden. Defying the village community’s laws, she impulsively takes the lonely girl into the house. Skalde reacts with horror and chases Meisis back into the woods. Later, the two encounter each other again, and Meisis is now allowed to stay with Skalde and Edith. But many villagers are superstitious and convinced that wolves exchange their own children, in human form, for human children. These children can supposedly be recognized by the fact that their teeth are permanent from childhood onward. After several sheep disappear, suspicion falls on Meisis. To protect herself and the child, Skalde proposes to the community that Meisis’s baby teeth be shown in six months. At the same time, Skalde and her mother begin to grow close again. When several children from the village eventually disappear without a trace and Edith dies, Skalde flees with Meisis across the river to a new life.
