Arzt mit Nebenwirkung (2017)

Out of consideration for his mother, and also out of a certain sense of guilt, Fabian Lauber took over his father’s rural medical practice. He is also a passionate BASE jumper. At an acupuncture training course in alternative medicine—which he considers nonsense and attends only because he still needs a certificate for such a course—he meets the instructor, Janne Jarst, a specialist in Chinese medicine. When the young doctor crashes his motorcycle after riding too fast, he has a near-death experience, which cracks the protective shell he has built around himself. Janne is the one who brings him back to life. Although Fabian is unconscious, he sees her resuscitating him. The doctor advises him to take it easy for the time being, but he disregards her advice because he wants to compete in a wingsuit competition. However, with help from his mother, Anita, he persuades Janne, to whom he feels inexplicably drawn, to fill in at the practice. During an outing in the mountains, Fabian and Janne grow closer. He tells her about his father’s death, how he was unable to help him, and how ever since then he has doubted his abilities as a doctor. The two spend the night together, but when Janne wakes the next morning, Fabian is gone. Janne draws her own conclusions and gives up the temporary position at the practice. She also turns down Fabian’s offer to take over the practice, ending a relationship that had barely begun. Shortly afterward, Fabian’s mother tells him that things cannot go on like this and that she will no longer be available as his receptionist, so the practice will have to close. Fabian slowly realizes that he needs Janne in his life, even though she believes in things that cannot be proven and that run counter to his way of thinking. It will still be some time before Janne comes back into his life. Through his mother, Fabian learns that Janne is back in the area and is once again teaching the very course he fell asleep in back then. Naturally, he seizes the opportunity and attends the training, this time with great interest. He learns that Janne has not been able to forget him either, and the two find their way back to each other while sitting on a boat jetty.
