Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1960s Hamburg, Gisela Werler worked as a packer at a wallpaper company. She lives with her parents in a small apartment and has few social contacts. Through her colleague Uwe, she meets Hermann Wittorf. She falls for his charm and is not put off even by the fact that he is a bank robber. She quickly becomes first an accomplice and then the driving force behind the robberies with Hermann and Uwe. Because she always wears a wig and sunglasses and, with a pistol held out, politely demands that the bank branches hand over the money, the press calls her the “Banklady.” As the robberies become more frequent in Hamburg and the surrounding area, Inspector Fischer is assigned to catch the bank robbers. Gisela grows bolder in her role as the “Banklady” and robs a bank during Beatrix’s wedding, since most people are following the wedding at that time. After a long, unsuccessful manhunt, complications arise during a robbery: the bank employees resist. A prolonged exchange of gunfire follows, and the bank robbers make a hasty escape. The police catch all three perpetrators after a car accident caused by the escape. All three are sentenced to lengthy prison terms. Later, Gisela and Hermann marry in prison.
