Full plot (contains spoilers)

Britt Larsson works in a factory and is generally dissatisfied with her life, with no particular interests. Her life consists of chance encounters and passing interests. By one such chance, she meets Robban, who dreams of a great career as a pop singer. In reality, he works for a pipeline company. They have sex in the back seat of his car, but after that night he disappears from her life. Britt becomes pregnant, changes jobs, and becomes a shop assistant. Under pressure from her family, Britt is forced to accept the idea of having the child. She seeks Robban out again and surprises him by telling him she is pregnant. She has had a few encounters with Björn, who comes from a very different background from Robban. Björn is an intellectual young man; his mother works at an art gallery, and he has a conflicted relationship with her bourgeois lifestyle. Robban and Britt cannot stay together. Their life together in the home she rents falls apart. Björn approaches Britt. Through him, she experiences something of a new way of life. He also teaches her to listen to music, visits the City Library with her, and plays Vivaldi for her. Conflicts arise between Britt and Björn, too. He oversteps with her and does not understand her. He disappears from her life. Disgusted with his mother and his own life, he leaves for Paris. Britt gives birth to her child. After this, she finds a new freedom. Her family no longer weighs her down, nor does her environment. She can begin living in a different way.
