A gas-station mechanic discovers she is heir to a castle and must navigate an unfamiliar aristocratic life.
The story
After Baron von Rosensteen dies without heirs, his castle is expected to pass to the Rabenfeldt family. A letter found among the late baron’s papers reveals that he had a child outside marriage with a woman of non-noble birth. The dowager baroness and High Court attorney Berg set out to find the child, who proves to be Anne Tofte, a mechanic working at a gas station with her uncle and his colleague. Though reluctant, Anne agrees to stay at the castle, where the baroness tries to train her in aristocratic manners. Feeling out of place, Anne has little company beyond the castle’s ghost.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film begins with the funeral of Baron von Rosensteen. Since he has no heirs, the old Rosensteen Castle is due to be inherited by the Rabenfeldt family. High Court attorney Berg (Emil Hass Christensen) visits the dowager baroness (Maria Garland) about a document—a letter he found among her late son’s papers. It reveals that the baron had a child out of wedlock with a woman who was not of noble birth. The dowager baroness and the attorney decide to find the child, an heir to the castle. The child turns out to be Anne Tofte (Ghita Nørby), who works at a gas station with her uncle, Lars Tofte (Ove Sprogøe), and his colleague, Hans Høy (Dirch Passer). They persuade Anne to stay with the baroness for a while, though Anne is not keen on the idea. The dowager baroness tries to teach Anne to be a fine lady instead of the boyish mechanic her uncle raised her to be. Anne feels completely out of place and has no one to talk to except the castle’s ghost (Karin Nellemose). Meanwhile, the Rabenfeldts try to get rid of her by burning the baron’s letter. The ghost does not want the castle to fall into the Rabenfeldts’ hands and persuades a slightly drunk Hans Høy to find Anne’s baptismal certificate. The Rabenfeldts also try to get Anne to marry Henning Rabenfeldt (Henrik Wiehe), but at the last moment, with the ghost’s help, she chooses to marry Hans Høy instead.
