A newlywed’s attempt to keep his honeymoon private spirals into a deception involving a vagrant posing as a baron.

The story

Newly married Hans von Grabow hopes to enjoy his honeymoon without interruption, particularly from his mother-in-law. When she arrives unexpectedly with her husband, Hans invents a solution: he presents a vagrant named Blaukehlchen as his old school friend, Baron von Kimmel, who is supposedly staying in the guest room. The ruse takes an unexpected turn when Hans’s mother-in-law takes a liking to the impostor and asks him to stay. Blaukehlchen settles in with the Grabows, drinks their liquor, and becomes friendly with local dignitaries, while the household’s mistaken identity begins to create further complications.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Newly married Hans von Grabow wants to be left undisturbed on his honeymoon, especially by his mother-in-law. When she turns up at the door for a surprise visit with her husband, Hugo Windisch, Hans passes off a vagrant called Blaukehlchen as his old school friend, Baron von Kimmel, who has supposedly taken over the guest room. But his mother-in-law takes a liking to the false school friend and asks him to stay. He then makes himself at home with the Grabows, drinks up their liquor, and befriends the local dignitaries. He even lets the Windischs persuade him to become engaged to their daughter, Sophie. Finally, he dares to take old Windisch and Sophie along with him to a “ragamuffin’s ball” at night. But then the real Baron von Kimmel appears. The deception is exposed, and Blaukehlchen has to break off his engagement to Sophie and set off “on the road” once more.
