Full plot (contains spoilers)
Willi Kritz earns his living as a night watchman and corpse washer at the German Institute of Pathology at the East Berlin hospital. He has also found another source of income: he steals pathological specimens and smuggles them into West Berlin disguised as the Berlin Bear. His buyer is Frundsberg, and the handoff always takes place in Frundsberg’s American car. Lilo Berger, head of the credit department at Hippo Bank, is addicted to gambling and gets money for it from her bank by approving loans for a nonexistent Dr. Tassilo Tetzlaff. Her boss, Dr. Reinhart, notices that this Dr. Tetzlaff has not yet made any loan payments and wants to inspect his practice. This puts Lilo in a very difficult position. Then luck comes to her aid: she hits Willi with her car as he cycles along with contraband, dressed as a bear. At her sister’s medical practice, she discovers that Willi is a smuggler. She blackmails him, and he now has to pose as Dr. Tetzlaff to reassure Lilo’s boss. Willi plays the role so well that Dr. Reinhart wants to hire him as chief physician at Dr. Sahner’s clinic. Lilo had denied Dr. Sahner a loan, and Reinhart wants Willi in the position so that Dr. Sahner can then get the loan approved. As chief physician Dr. Tetzlaff, Willi champions “active patient acquisition”—in other words, “picking up patients wherever they arise.” As things unfold, Lilo’s poker buddy Kalle Kriwitz, the dealer Frundsberg, and Dr. Reinhart, among others, end up as patients at the clinic. Eventually, Dr. Tetzlaff is supposed to perform an operation, and the deception is exposed. Everyone now knows about the fraud except Dr. Reinhart. Willi persuades the other people involved to keep quiet. That is the only way he can remain a doctor, Dr. Sahner can keep running his clinic, and Lilo can avoid having to repay the money she obtained through fraud.
