The story

Lena, a young, up-and-coming blonde singer known as “Bella Donna,” draws admirers with her sensual performances, including a song made famous by Zarah Leander. Fritz, an unemployed saxophonist who is anything but daring, pursues her until she agrees to spend a night of passion with him. He falls for her and believes he has found his one true love. Lena, however, wants to keep her freedom: Fritz is not among her goals, and she sees their night as a little adventure, one of several one-night stands that mean little to her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

“Bella Donna” is the young, up-and-coming blonde singer Lena, whose admirers’ hearts come flocking to her, especially when she sings the old Zarah Leander hit “Can Love Be a Sin?” in a sensual, sultry way. One of her admirers is Fritz, an unemployed saxophonist who is anything but daring. He keeps pursuing the beautiful woman until she finally agrees to spend a night of passion with him. He falls for her completely and now believes he has found his one true love. As expected, Lena sees things differently, since she has no intention of giving up her freedom. “Bella Donna” has clear goals, and Fritz certainly isn’t among them; she also likes variety when it comes to men. To Lena, the young man was merely a little adventure, one of several one-night stands that meant little to her. On the one hand, Lena finds her admirer a little tiresome; on the other, she is flattered by the incredible ingenuity Fritz displays in pursuing his Bella Donna, even enlisting his ex-girlfriend to help. Before long, Lena and Fritz cannot live with each other, but they cannot live without each other either, and their relationship begins to develop into a real ordeal.
