An elderly gay laundry owner gives a wounded neo-Nazi a second chance, confronting both a troubled present and the guilt of his past.

The story

Eighty-year-old Gustav Tritzinsky runs a dry-cleaning shop in Vienna and lives above it with Jacob. One night, he encounters Axel, a young man fleeing the police with an injury. Axel has joined a neo-Nazi group and was forced to stab a social worker, but Gustav treats his wound and gives him a place to stay. Flashbacks reveal that Gustav, who is gay, once betrayed a friend in the Hitler Youth, leaving him to die in a concentration camp. When Gustav learns more about Axel’s actions, he nevertheless offers him a second chance, a job at the laundry, and shelter after Axel is thrown out by his stepfather.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Eighty-year-old Gustav Tritzinsky has run a dry-cleaning shop in Vienna for decades. He lives in an apartment above the shop with the transgender Jacob. One night, Gustav suspects there is a burglar, but the supposed burglar is fleeing from the police and is injured. His name is Axel. He has joined the neo-Nazis and was forced to stab a social worker. Gustav takes him in, treats his wound, and offers him a bed. Meanwhile, flashbacks reveal how Gustav, who was gay, betrayed his friend in the Hitler Youth, thereby leaving him to die in a concentration camp. Before long, Gustav learns what Axel has done, but wants to give him a second chance. He lets Axel, who has been thrown out of his home by his stepfather, move in and gives him a job at the laundry. But when Axel continues meeting with the neo-Nazis and behaves ungratefully toward Gustav, Gustav promptly throws him out. When the neo-Nazis come under police scrutiny, they want to eliminate Gustav because they suspect Axel has told him about their activities. In a poster campaign, they label Gustav “dangerous” because he is gay. Gustav then barricades himself inside his apartment, and when he sees his windows being smashed and hears himself being insulted with chants, he decides to hang himself. But at the last second, Axel rushes into the room to save Gustav. Axel apologizes, but a few minutes later Gustav dies in his arms. Meanwhile, a counter-demonstration has gathered in the street outside Gustav’s home and succeeds in making the neo-Nazis leave the area.
