A 15-year-old boy’s dream of astronomy is eclipsed when poverty and an infatuation draw him into exploitation.
The story
Tomek is a 15-year-old student living on the Polish side of the German-Polish border, where poverty and limited prospects shape everyday life. He dreams of astronomy and hopes his school will buy a telescope that could help him enter a competition, but the school settles for a cheaper one. At a disco, Tomek meets Marta and falls in love. As she presses him to buy increasingly expensive things, he takes odd jobs but earns little. He turns to his friend Ciemny, who works as a male prostitute, for a loan; when that fails, Tomek approaches a pimp, whose offer leads him toward a dangerous new life.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Tomek is a 15-year-old school student who lives on the Polish side of the German-Polish border. His social surroundings are marked by poverty and a lack of prospects for the future. His dream and greatest hobby is astronomy, and he also attends the church’s youth group from time to time. He hopes the school will buy a telescope so he can take part in a competition. But his teacher, Mr. Weber, can only persuade the school administration to buy a cheaper telescope. At a disco, where he thinks he can pick up some paperwork for his sister’s school, he meets Marta. He falls in love with her, and Marta pressures him with her demands for veneers, then expensive sneakers and other costly things. Tomek tries to meet her demands by taking various odd jobs, but he earns very little. So he asks his friend Ciemny, who works as a male prostitute, to lend him money. Ciemny refuses. Finally, Tomek asks Borys, a pimp. Borys offers him a job, and after initially refusing, Tomek eventually accepts. This is how his life as a male prostitute begins. Marta eventually leaves him for the older Arek, and Tomek is brutally raped and injured by a client, Max. To get revenge on his pimp, Tomek reports him anonymously to the police and then takes over the pimping business himself. Ciemny wants to work for him, and Tomek sets him up with Max. Max critically injures Ciemny, and Tomek sees him again in the hospital. Looking out of the hospital-room window, he sees Marta getting into a pimp’s car. Tomek takes a moped and follows them. Eventually, he manages to stop Max’s car and tries to pull the resisting Marta out of it. The police arrive and arrest Tomek and Max. During questioning, a police officer tells Tomek that Ciemny has died in the hospital. In an unobserved moment at the police station, Max tries to buy Tomek’s silence. Tomek then repeatedly strikes Max on the head with his motorcycle helmet. The film’s final image shows Tomek apathetically playing with his phone.
