A harmless office employee’s Bond-inspired fantasies collide with real international espionage in a remote Swiss village.

The story

Frank Born, a low-level employee, is so captivated by novels and films about British super-agent James Bond that he develops a psychosis called “Bonditis.” Long imagining himself as a second Bond in dreams and fantasies, he is sent to a remote Swiss mountain village for treatment. Instead of calming his imagination, the village becomes the setting for a real espionage struggle. Soviet and Chinese agents compete, while seductive women appear to have their own designs on him. Born, a bachelor who is harmless and peace-loving at heart, finds himself mistaken for the real 007 and unsure whom he can trust.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Frank Born is a low-level employee who is so enthusiastic about the novels and films featuring the British super-agent James Bond that he develops a psychosis known as “Bonditis.” In his dreams and fantasies, Born has long imagined himself as a second Bond, so he is sent to a remote Swiss mountain village for treatment. But there, his wild imaginings and daydreams become reality, and Born gets caught up in the machinations of international intelligence agencies. Now the reluctant agent can show what he has learned from his great British role model. His opponents include not only Soviet and Chinese agents, who are fiercely competing with one another. Some of the seductive women who cross his path there also seem to have designs on him. Before long, the bachelor, harmless and peace-loving at heart, whom everyone takes for the real, one and only Mr. 007, no longer knows whom he can trust—were it not for the alluring Hata Sari, modeled on Mata Hari if not in name alone, who knows how to handle her weapons and takes his side. Of course, there also has to be an object of desire for the international spies, and, as in many a spy film, it is a top-secret and extremely important microfilm that the international espionage crowd fights over to the death. It is none other than the somewhat bumbling Frank Born who seems to succeed in getting his hands on it.
