After his estranged father is injured, Tommaso returns to the ranch he resents to help train a difficult horse—and confront their damaged relationship.

The story

Young Tommaso has been estranged from his father, Renato, whose isolated ranch in Tuscany is the place where Tommaso and his sister Viola grew up without their mother. Tommaso has always hated the ranch, but when Renato breaks his arm in a fall from a horse, he is forced to return and help keep the family business running. Father and son take on the challenge of training a stubborn horse for a cross-country competition. As they work together, they must also face the anger and resentment that have kept them apart, and consider whether their lost closeness can be restored.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Young Tommaso has not seen his father, Renato, for a long time. Their relationship is extremely conflict-ridden and unresolved. Renato lives on an isolated ranch in Tuscany, where he runs a horse-breeding farm and a riding school. It is where Tommaso and his sister Viola grew up without a mother. The place’s nickname is the evocative “Brado.” When Renato breaks his arm in a fall from a horse, Tommaso is forced to help his father keep the family ranch going—a place he has always hated. The two reunite to train a stubborn horse and then take it to win a cross-country competition, while also trying to untangle the knot of anger, hostility, and resentment that has kept them apart for so long. The horse faces a difficult obstacle course, but so do the two of them as they try to rebuild the love and closeness they lost when their mother was gone.
