Full plot (contains spoilers)

Roberto, who goes by Roby, is a young man who divides his time between hanging out at a nightclub on the outskirts of Milan and riding an old Russian-made motorcycle with a sidecar, which is held together with the help of his mechanic friend Oscar. Unemployed, Roby often finds himself having to wheedle money out of both his girlfriend Sandra and his mechanic friend. One evening, while dancing at the club, he spots Cindy, a foreigner, and manages to get a few dates with her. But Cindy is American, the daughter of an industrialist who is in Milan for work, and is in some way already involved with Rick, a club dancer like Roby, but from a very wealthy family. This sparks a rivalry between Roby and Rick over Cindy, which first leads to a fistfight and then unfolds through motorcycle and dance-floor challenges. When Roby finally wins a dance contest, he realizes that he prefers Sandra to his infatuation with Cindy.
