The story
The Prickwitz family rents out rooms, and the father also sells sparkling wine while his daughter works as a nurse. To earn extra money, she secretly dances at a bar called “The Veiled Maja,” where her mother soon takes a job as a cloakroom attendant. They must keep their work from the strict father, whose conservative principles would make him disapprove.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The Prickwitz family rents out rooms. The head of the household also works as a sparkling-wine salesman, while his daughter works as a nurse. To earn some extra money, however, she secretly also works as a dancer at a bar called “The Veiled Maja,” where her mother soon finds a job as a cloakroom attendant as well. Her strict father must not find out about either of these jobs, since they would go against his conservative principles. Shortly afterward, when he manages to secure a contract to supply sparkling wine to the bar, he visits the establishment himself and encounters not only his wife and daughter, but also Dr. Kirst, who is a doctor and both the daughter’s colleague and her lover. The latter fact eventually softens the father, since he sees that his daughter is well looked after.
