A struggling older couple must find the money to cover a notary’s expenses before they can claim an unexpected inheritance.

The story

Charles and Lucie are an older couple living with little money: he works more or less as a secondhand dealer, while she is a building superintendent and cleaning woman. A notary arrives with news that a recently deceased distant relative they never knew has left them a luxurious house in the south of France, a car, and income from money invested in Switzerland. There is a catch: they must pay the notary’s out-of-pocket expenses before they can receive the inheritance. To raise the money, they sell all their belongings and set off for the south.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Charles and Lucie, an older couple with little money—he more or less a secondhand dealer, she a building superintendent and cleaning woman—are visited by a notary who tells them they have just inherited a luxurious house in the south of France, a car, and the income from money invested in Switzerland by a recently deceased, distant relative they never knew. To receive the inheritance, they first have to pay the notary’s out-of-pocket expenses. To do so, they end up selling all their belongings before setting off for the south, where they discover, standing in front of a house that doesn’t exist, that they have been swindled. But this misadventure will be the beginning of a new life.
