A conflict-averse young journalist and musician navigates family ties and romantic relationships while struggling to express her own point of view.

The story

Anežka is a quiet young journalist and musician who believes that relationships should be free of conflict. To preserve that ideal, she hides her own opinions from herself and avoids expressing them. Her everyday life brings her into contact with lovers who are already married and fathers, a talkative grandmother in her eighties who has cancer, a long-depressed mother, an energetic father, and a senile grandfather in hospital. As she moves through these family and romantic relationships, Anežka’s reluctance to speak honestly shapes how she relates to those around her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Anežka (Jenovéfa Boková) is a quiet young woman, a journalist and musician, who believes that every relationship, whether family or romantic, should be free of conflict—even at the cost of giving up her own point of view, which she hides from herself just as she refuses to express it. The film depicts everyday situations, whether with her lovers, who are already married and fathers, her talkative, cancer-stricken grandmother in her eighties, her mother, who has been depressed for a long time, her energetic father, or her senile grandfather in hospital. The director gives great importance to natural landscapes, including a recurring view of rolling hills shown in different seasons, marking the passage of time. In the second half of the film, the heroine eventually begins to reveal a little of herself, notably during a visit to a therapist, marked by long silences, and during her night with a Slovak musician. The final sequences open out onto nature and convey an optimistic sense of serenity.
