A long-term-care nurse’s search for her childhood friend draws her into conflicting memories of the past.
The story
Piroska, an overweight nurse on a long-term hospital ward, lives a monotonous life and struggles to connect with the people around her. Her distant partner criticizes her weight and temper, while her work and a new colleague add to her frustrations. When an elderly woman arrives whose name recalls Piroska’s only childhood friend, Pál Adrienn, she decides to find her. Piroska visits former teachers and classmates hoping they can help, but each person remembers Adrienn differently, turning the search into a journey through both Piroska’s memories and the recollections of those she encounters.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Overweight Piroska leads a monotonous life as a nurse on a hospital ward for long-term patients, and barely interacts with the healthy people around her. She rarely speaks, and when she does, she gets it wrong: her insensitivity only deepens the grief of the deceased patients’ relatives, and the head of the ward often criticizes her work for it. Her problems are compounded by the fact that her relationship with her partner is hardly intimate. Kálmán is growing increasingly distant from her and constantly provokes her about her weight and bad temper, hoping she will lose weight or change. But she is unable to resist cream cakes, so the only thing that disrupts her monotonous daily routine is training the nurse assigned to work alongside her. Piroska shows no mercy to her new colleague, making her take on the hardest tasks without a trace of sympathy. But soon her attention is caught by the name of an elderly woman brought to the ward for long-term patients. The woman reminds Piroska of the only friend she had in childhood, Pál Adrienn, and the memories of the distant past prompt her to decide to get back in touch. Her search sets off a contradictory journey through her own memories and those of the people she meets. She visits former teachers and classmates in the hope that they know where Adrienn might be, though each of them remembers her differently.
