The story
Bruno Salvati, an unsuccessful film director recently separated from Anna, remains on good terms with her as they raise their two children: responsible young-adult Adele and troubled teenager Tito. After medical tests prompted by a minor physical injury, Bruno learns he has a form of leukemia. When his children prove unsuitable donors for a stem cell transplant, Bruno’s father Umberto reveals that Bruno has a half-sister. Bruno sets out with Umberto and his children to find Fiorella, hoping she may be a possible donor. The story moves between Bruno’s hospital treatment and events outside the hospital.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Bruno Salvati is a director with little success, recently separated from his wife Anna, with whom he has remained on good terms. Anna and Bruno have two children: Adele, a responsible young woman in her twenties, and Tito, a troubled teenager. After undergoing tests following a minor physical injury, Bruno discovers that he has a form of leukemia. Since Tito and Adele are not suitable donors for a hematopoietic stem cell transplant, his father, Umberto, decides to tell him about the existence of a half-sister. The director then sets off with his father and children in search of a woman named Fiorella. The four manage to find Bruno’s half-sister, who is initially shaken and reluctant to have her bone marrow removed, but later agrees to donate. The story alternates between the time spent in hospital receiving chemotherapy before the transplant and the rest of the story.
