Two brothers and their families struggle to preserve their dignity and survive as poverty reshapes their lives.
The story
Brothers Vincenzo and Sabino, married to Maja and Angela respectively, are the sons of two farmers from Puglia. Their families face economic hardship for different reasons: one suffers the expropriation of an olive-planted plot of land for derisory compensation, while the other longs to have a child. The resulting financial insecurity strains their emotional and family ties, threatens the protagonists’ dignity, and leaves them in a continual struggle to survive while hoping to overcome poverty.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two brothers, Vincenzo and Sabino, married to Maja and Angela respectively, are the sons of two Puglian farmers. The expropriation of a plot of land planted with olive trees in exchange for a derisory compensation in one case, and the dream of being able to have a child in the other, are the causes of the economic hardship into which the two families fall. Their financial insecurity has a profound effect on their emotional and family ties and on the protagonists’ dignity, forcing them into a constant struggle for survival in the hope of getting the better of this “damned poverty.”
