Full plot (contains spoilers)

Grete Schober has a job as a cashier in a department store. One morning, as she is once again on her way to work, the handsome young Dr. Fred Werder spots her from a car and immediately takes a liking to the titular Miss from Checkout 12. He even offers Grete a ride. But Miss Schober wants to protect her good reputation and thinks the dashing Fred is merely an ordinary chauffeur, so she promptly turns down his bold offer. She cannot know that Dr. Werder is a co-owner of a newspaper, the “Zeitspiegel.” When that very paper holds a prize contest in which one can win a brand-new car, Grete enters, delighted. Grete and Fred meet again at the event. To win Grete’s heart after all, Fred has to do a little scheming, since the contest is won by someone else: Theodora Blau, a demonstrator of canned sardines. Fritz arranges things so that Grete wins the car along with a chauffeur—and, of course, he is that handsome driver himself. Everything would have gone so well if the furious rightful winner hadn’t discovered the deception. She moves heaven and earth and lands the young couple in serious trouble, for now Fritz and Grete are arrested for fraud. With the help of Commercial Councillor Werder, the uncle and owner of the other half of the newspaper, matters are put right, and Fred and Grete are released. Grete may now be without a car of her own again, but she has a wealthy future husband who, naturally, has a vehicle of his own.
