When baker’s children Rose and Heinrich accidentally release fairy-tale figures from a book, they discover that the stories they barely know face a threat.

The story

Rose and Heinrich, baker’s children, find a fairy-tale book at the market and take it home, though their parents have no time to read to them. That night, the book falls from its cupboard and releases Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, the Devil, and a witch. The children soon make clear that they do not know the fairy-tale figures, while a quarrel brings up the Big Bad End, which wants to eat the book so the tales will be forgotten. The book has also lost its magical glow, leaving the figures unable to return to their world.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

As the two baker’s children, Rose and Heinrich, wander around the market, they find a fairy-tale book and take it home. Their parents don’t have time to read it to them. In the fairy-tale world, Mrs. Liebegüte watches with concern as people read fewer and fewer books and tell fewer and fewer stories. As a result, the “Wheel of Time” is becoming increasingly unbalanced. That night, Rose and Heinrich try to get the book down from the cupboard where their mother had put it away. It falls, and Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, the Devil from The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs, and the witch from Hansel and Gretel tumble out of its pages. It quickly becomes clear that the children don’t know the fairy-tale characters, and during the argument that follows, the name of the greatest threat to the fairy-tale land is mentioned: the Big Bad End. The “Big Bad End” is after the fairy-tale book Rose and Heinrich found at the market. It wants to eat it so that the fairy tales will be forgotten. The fairy-tale characters realize that the book has lost its magical glow, so they cannot return to the fairy-tale land. They ask Rose and Heinrich to help them—after all, the children shook them out of the book. The children are supposed to go to Mrs. Liebegüte and save her with the “Wheel of Time.” If they believe in the power of fairy tales, they will find the way across the silver bridge to the fairy-tale land and be able to save it from the “Big Bad End.” The children set out with the fairy-tale book to look for the silver bridge. The Devil and the witch go with them to protect them from the “Big Bad End.” The other fairy-tale characters stay behind in the bakery and hide. In the dark market, Rose and Heinrich narrowly escape the “Big Bad End,” which had been drawn there by the fairy-tale characters’ argument. The next morning, their parents cannot find the children, but they discover a note the children left behind, asking them to trust them—they want to save the fairy-tale book. Together with the witch and the Devil, Rose and Heinrich search the forest for the silver bridge. After a while, they find the way to Mrs. Liebegüte. To save the “Wheel of Time,” they have to solve a riddle. At the last minute, Rose and Heinrich manage to solve it and save the fairy-tale book.
