Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot (1955)

The gold-greedy dwarfs live in the fairy-tale forest. One of them tries to steal the king’s treasure from the castle, but is caught and flees. Prince Goldhaar and his brother, Prince Rittersporn, pursue him, during which the dwarf turns Prince Goldhaar into a bear. While searching for Prince Goldhaar, Prince Rittersporn and his squire Knickebein meet Schneeweißchen and her sister Rosenrot while they are picking mushrooms. On their way home, the sisters meet the wicked dwarf, whose beard has become trapped in a tree trunk, but he shows no gratitude for their help. At home, the sisters tell their mother about their adventures. In winter, the bear knocks on their door. Schneeweißchen, Rosenrot, and their mother take him in, and he helps with the housework. In summer, during an outing, Prince Rittersporn nearly shoots him while hunting; however, Schneeweißchen and Rosenrot convince the prince that the bear is tame. Longing for his brother, the bear flees into the forest. While searching for him, Schneeweißchen and Rosenrot meet the dwarf again, this time with his beard caught in a cart. Once again, he is ungrateful for the sisters’ help. On their way home, they encounter the dwarf yet again, this time in danger of being dragged into the rushing stream by his catch while fishing. Reluctantly, Schneeweißchen and Rosenrot help him once more. As the dwarf starts ranting again, the bear appears; the dwarf recognizes him as Prince Goldhaar. When the dwarf plunges into the depths as he flees, the bear turns back into the prince. The stolen treasure is also restored. Prince Goldhaar marries Schneeweißchen, Prince Rittersporn marries Rosenrot, and the sisters’ mother is allowed to live in the castle too.
