After losing his job, a workaholic father is forced to confront the distance within his family and the troubled household next door.
The story
Roland Spatz, a workaholic, has become estranged from his wife, Sybille, and their teenage sons, Charles and Linus. Losing his job as a risk manager forces him to reckon with family life. Sybille retreats into an affair and her work at an art gallery; Charles discovers his homosexuality while serving in the military; and Linus builds bombs in an effort to attract attention, frightening the neighborhood. The family next door offers a darker contrast: the Krügers have lost a son, and the surviving family members are struggling with alcoholism, pill addiction, and suicidal feelings.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Roland Spatz is a workaholic who, over the years, has grown estranged from his wife, Sybille, and their two teenage sons, Charles and Linus. When he loses his job as a risk manager, he is suddenly forced to deal with his family: his wife, who takes refuge in an affair and in working at her gallery; his eldest son, Charles, who discovers his homosexuality while in the military; and his youngest son, Linus, who builds bombs to get attention and terrorizes the neighborhood. The Krüger family next door serves as a counterpoint to Roland’s efforts to create an idyllic nuclear family. They lost a son several years ago: the father is an alcoholic, the mother is addicted to pills, and the daughter is suicidal. Near the end of the film, after Linus sets his parents’ house on fire and Florina Krüger, high on pills, jumps into the swimming pool, Roland and Sybille work together to save Florina’s life. In the end, the two fall asleep arm in arm in the garden of their burned-down house. Linus narrates that in chemistry, everything is always in motion.
