A fundraiser in the Middle East bends her own project’s rules while trying to keep it alive amid security threats and growing personal turmoil.

The story

Dorothea works as a fundraiser for the UNHCR in an unspecified location in the Middle East. Her project is meant to identify talented girls in refugee camps and offer them the chance to study in England, but security threats have left nearby camps practically empty. Determined not to abandon the initiative, Dorothea bypasses its eligibility criteria and awards a scholarship to a girl who has not finished school. As the girl is sent to London, Dorothea continues soliciting donations from wealthy hotel guests and local dignitaries. Her encounters with Alec, a much younger bon vivant, bring personal complications that begin to threaten the project.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Dorothea works as a fundraiser for the UNHCR in an unspecified location in the Middle East. Her current project aims to identify talented girls in refugee camps and give them the opportunity to study in England. Dorothea’s problem is that, because of the current security threats, the camps nearby are practically empty, so at first she cannot find anyone to support with the project’s funds. Dorothea sees herself as a charity professional who does not simply give up on a project just because there is currently no one to help. On the spot, she circumvents the eligibility criteria of her own project and awards a scholarship to a girl who has not even finished school yet. While the girl is put on a plane to London, Dorothea passes the time by wearing a succession of extravagant outfits and enticing wealthy hotel guests and local dignitaries to donate to her project. Eventually, Alec crosses her path: a much younger bohemian and bon vivant who immediately realizes that, between her receptions, Dorothea is gripped by an inner emptiness that she tries to suppress by drinking heavily. He offers himself as a distraction, and she thanks him by using her credit card. Their relationship soon takes on an excessive character, problems mount, and the project is in danger of failing.
