A family’s Holocaust legacy shapes a mother’s search for proof of heritage and a teenager’s struggle with identity.
The story
In January 1945, as the Red Army liberates Auschwitz, men cleaning a gas chamber discover a Jewish child named Éva, who has survived the camp. Decades later, elderly Éva lives in Germany and is somewhat demented. Her daughter Léna asks for documents confirming her family’s Jewish heritage so she can enroll her children in a Jewish school and seek compensation as a Holocaust survivor’s descendant. But Éva resists profiting from what happened, and the family’s records are complicated by forged passports that concealed her ancestry. Meanwhile, Léna’s son Jonás feels excluded at his Berlin secondary school and is uncertain about his identity, even as he falls in love with his Muslim classmate Yasmin.
